ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION PROMOTERS INITIATIVE (EPPI) CONDEMNS BURNING OF RECOVERED CRUDE OIL PRODUCTS, CALLS FOR SUSTAINABLE UTILIZATION AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION IN NIGER DELTA REGION
Delta state, Nigeria – The Environmental Protection Promoters Initiative (EPPI), a non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting environmental sustainability, strongly condemns the burning of crude oil products recovered from oil thieves (illegal bunkering) in the Niger Delta region. This destructive practice has devastated the environment, harmed local communities, and wasted valuable resources that could contribute to economic growth.
ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION AND RESOURCE LOSS
The burning of recovered crude oil products has released toxic pollutants into the air, contaminating water sources, and destroying fertile land. This has had a devastating impact on the environment and the health of surrounding communities. For instance:
– In Delta State, the burning of recovered crude oil products has polluted the Warri River, affecting the livelihoods of fishermen and communities dependent on the water source.
ALTERNATIVE UTILIZATION FOR ECONOMIC GROWTH
EPPI advocates for the positive utilization of recovered crude oil products, such as:
– Refining for domestic consumption
– Exportation to generate revenue
– Conversion into petroleum products (e.g., diesel, gasoline)
This approach would not only reduce environmental pollution but also contribute to Nigeria’s economic growth and stability.
ADVICE TO SECURITY OPERATIVES AND GOVERNMENT AGENCIES
EPPI urges security operatives and concerned government agencies to:
– Prioritize environmental protection (water, air, and land) during operations
– Implement sustainable methods for managing recovered crude oil products
– Collaborate with environmental agencies to mitigate pollution
– Strengthen laws and enforcement against oil theft and vandalization
CONDEMNATION OF OIL THEFT AND VANDALIZATION
EPPI strongly condemns the criminal activities of oil thieves and vandals, which:
– Harm the environment and communities
– Undermine Nigeria’s economy and stability
– Jeopardize the livelihoods of legitimate oil industry workers
We call on all stakeholders to join forces in protecting our environment and promoting sustainable utilization of resources.
