Environmental Protection Promoters Initiative (EPPI) Raises Concern Over Solar Energy System-Related Fire Outbreaks In Nigeria, Calls For Enhanced Safety Measures And Collaboration
Delta state, Nigeria – The Environmental Protection Promoters Initiative (EPPI), a non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting environmental sustainability and safety, is alarmed by the recent spate of fire outbreaks associated with the use of solar energy systems in some homes in Nigeria. As the nation embraces renewable energy solutions, EPPI stresses the need for concerted efforts to mitigate potential fire hazards and ensure the safe adoption of this technology.
INVESTIGATION AND IDENTIFIED SOURCES OF IGNITION
EPPI’s investigation into the incidents has revealed two primary sources of ignition:
- Overloading: Connecting too many appliances to power outlets (socket, extension box, etc) and a solar panel, leading to overheating and potential ignition of nearby flammable materials (cable insulators, wood, papers etc).
- Errors in installation: Improper wiring, faulty connections, and substandard materials, resulting in short circuits and fires.
Overloading of an electrical power source occurs when the total amount of electrical current drawn from the source exceeds its rated capacity or maximum safe limit. This can cause the power source to overheat, leading to damage, fire, or even electrical shock.
THE IMPORTANCE OF SOLAR ENERGY
EPPI commends the adoption of solar energy as a vital step towards reducing Nigeria’s reliance on fossil fuels, mitigating climate change, and promoting sustainable development. However, we must ensure that this technology does not become a nightmare in Nigeria due to preventable fires.
FIRE PREVENTIVE TIPS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
To minimize the risk of solar energy system-related fires, EPPI recommends:
- Ensure proper installation by certified professionals
- Avoid overloading solar panels
- Regularly inspect and maintain solar energy systems
- Keep flammable materials away from solar panels
- Install fire detection and suppression systems
- Develop and enforce strict safety standards for solar energy installations
- Provide public awareness campaigns on solar energy safety
CALL FOR COLLABORATION AND INVESTMENT
EPPI urges the government, private sector, and individuals to invest in:
- Intensive skills training and empowerment programs for solar energy installers and maintenance personnel
- Infrastructure development to support the safe adoption of solar energy
- Research and development of innovative fire prevention and suppression technologies
A government-private partnership is crucial to ensuring that solar energy benefits Nigerians without compromising safety. We must work together to harness the power of solar energy while prioritizing safety and environmental protection.
